FAQ

In what ways can therapy be helpful for me?

Therapy can be helpful in so many ways for so many reasons.  Here are some examples:

  • provide an objective, nonjudgmental space for you to process your thoughts and emotions

This is a big one!  At times, we may feel as if family, friends, or acquaintances, "don't get it", we may feel shame, there may be cultural implications, or we might think we do not want to  be "a burden."  Therapy is helpful in that your Therapist is an objective person in your life.  Your Therapist does not know you nor do you know your Therapist!  Sometimes family and friends may have a hard time coming from an objective place because their relationship to us is more likely to have an emotional undertone.  It is okay to have different supports for different things!

Additional benefits:

  • gaining more understanding of yourself and behavioral patterns

  • improving communication and boundaries that may improve how you interact with the world

  • developing coping mechanisms to manage anxiety, depression, grief, anger, life transitions...etc.

There are factors that can play a role in the benefits gained from therapy, which include but are not limited to the following; consistent attendance, therapeutic rapport and alliance, the nature of your challenge(s), openness in therapy sessions, and work done outside of session.  We believe that growth can mainly come from the work one does outside of their therapy session.  This is where you can actually implement skills and techniques to situations in your daily life.

What can I expect during my consultation?

The consultation allows us to have a brief call where you can ask questions, discuss what you may be hoping to get out of therapy, and determine if the session space llc is the right fit for you.  To schedule a consultation, please call 203-951-9408 and leave a brief, clear message with the best number to reach you.  You will be contacted within 24-48 hrs.

Do you prescribe medication?

We do not prescribe medication.  Medication is prescribed by Psychiatrists, Primary Care Providers, and APRNs. If you are looking for medication management services, we encourage you to call your insurance provider.  Additionally, if you are already engaged in medication management or become interested in this service, with your consent, it can be helpful for your Prescriber and Therapist to collaborate for more streamlined care and to ensure your therapy and medication are targeting presenting problems and symptoms.

What can I expect in my first session?

The first appointment is a minimum of 60 minutes as it consists of a clinical assessment.  The assessment can include the gathering of information about your presenting concerns and symptoms in addition to historical information that can be pertinent to your care.  We will also discuss any questions, expectations, and goals you have for therapy.  A treatment plan will also be developed and reviewed periodically.  The treatment plan is helpful as it shows areas of progress and areas that may benefit from improvement.  Your therapy will begin at your 2nd appointment

How often do I need to have a session?

This varies on a case by case basis, but generally sessions are encouraged on a weekly basis.  The frequency of treatment can be modified throughout your treatment course depending on your needs.

Couldn't I just take medication?

That certainly may be an option you can take; however, this means the session space llc is not the right fit for you at this time as we only offer psychotherapy.

It is also important to note that medication treats symptoms, while therapy treats underlying causes, thoughts, past experiences, all of which impact our mental health.  The aforementioned is why some may choose therapy coupled with medication management for a more integrative approach to improving their mental health.
